Erik Hobbie, Laboratory Director

Erik Hobbie, Director

I am a Research Associate Professor at the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space and am also affiliated with the Department of Natural Resources. I use stable isotopes at natural abundance levels to understand carbon and nitrogen cycling in forest ecosystems, with a particular focus on the interactions between mycorrhizal fungi and their host plants. My webpage includes more information about my research and publications.

Andrew Ouimette, Laboratory Manager

Andy Ouimette, Lab Manager

Andrew Ouimette received his M.S. Degree in Geology and has been with the UNH Stable Isotope Laboratory since 2005. Prior to his position at UNH, Andy worked for the USGS Volcano Hazards Team in California. In addition to managing the UNH Stable Isotope Lab, Andy is a doctoral student since January 2009 in the Department of Natural Resources & Earth Sysems Science (NRESS) PhD program.

Other Personnel

Dr. Francesca Scandellari

Dr. Scandellari is a postdoctoral fellow working on a joint research program with Dr. Robert Mitchell at the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center in Ichauway, Georgia. She studies the role of ectomycorrhizal fungi in the carbon cycling of longleaf pine-wiregrass savannahs. She is particularly interested in determining the carbon isotope (δ13C) patterns of soil microbial fatty acids to obtain information about the carbon sources and metabolic status of mycorrhizal fungi.

Matt Vadeboncoeur

Matt is a doctoral student working with Erik Hobbie. He is interested in using stable isotopes and other techniques to better understand the role of mycorrhizal fungi in forest biogeochemical cycles, as well as possible interactions with global change and human management of forest ecosystems. Information about Matt's past research and CV is available at http://www.hubbardbrook.org/people/view.php?id=109.

Julee Shamhart

Julee Shamhart is a master’s student with Erik Hobbie. She is using isotopes to study the consumption and distribution of fungi by Arctic Ground Squirrels.
